The use of ChatGPT as a research tool in economics, econometrics and finance

Abstract

ChatGPT has experienced significant growth and adoption since 2018. Its accessibility and adaptability have expanded to all sectors, and it has proven to be a powerful tool that assists researchers in studying problems across various subjects. While numerous studies focus on the use of ChatGPT in various global contexts, it is necessary to conduct more specific research to determine the importance of ChatGPT in the fields of Economics, Econometrics, and Finance. This article conducts a bibliometric analysis using "ChatGPT" as a search string, following the methodology of Zupic and Cater. It was found that publications in the field of medicine accounted for 25.1% of the total reported in 24 knowledge areas, followed by social sciences at 19.7%, computer science at 10.26%, and engineering at 7.6%. Publications in Economics, Econometrics, and Finance regarding the use of ChatGPT as a tool were only 1.53%. The four countries with the most publications on the use of ChatGPT were the United States of America, the United Kingdom, China, and India. This research demonstrates that ChatGPT and AI are gaining momentum in different countries to maintain their position at the forefront of research, and they are likely to be soon adopted in the field of Economics.
